What is an Epidural Abscess?

Epidural abscesses are quite rare and caused by bacterial or fungal infections. This rare disease that can be potentially life-threatening is an inflammation involving a collection of pus between the outer membrane of the brain and spine (the meninges). The excess fluid can cause compression of the spinal cord, which if undiagnosed or treated untimely can cause serious injuries, including paraplegia or quadriplegia.

Risk Factors for Spinal Epidural Abscess

Although the cause of the disease is not always conclusive, a spinal epidural abscess may also be due to bodily infections. However, there are a number of risk factors for this disease, including:

  • Chronic ear or sinus infections
  • Head injury
  • Mastoiditis
  • Recent neurosurgery
  • Patients with boils on their back or scalp
  • Individuals with bone infections
  • People with a history of back surgery
