BE CAUTIOUS WITH HOLIDAY TRAVEL

AAA has released its 2021 Holiday Travel predictions and is expecting to see a three-fold increase over 2020 travel volume. According to the auto group, 109 million Americans can be expected to travel at least 50 miles from home to celebrate the upcoming holiday, an increase of 27.7 million over 2020 and just shy of pre-pandemic 2019 levels.

While a bulk of this year’s holiday traveling will take place in personal motor vehicles, airlines are expecting a 184% increase over last year’s numbers. People will, however, need to travel to and from the airport, meaning even airline passengers will contribute to vehicle traffic as we near the end of December.

When traffic increases, it becomes increasingly important to pay attention to how you are driving. Your actions and behaviors can help to cause or prevent an accident, and will play a pivotal role in how safely you and those you share the road with can travel.

STAY SAFE

If you are traveling for the holidays, remember to be patient. There will be more traffic. It will likely move a bit slower than usual. Give yourself plenty of extra time to reach your destination, enabling you to follow the flow of traffic and obey traffic signs and signals.

Remember to pay attention. Silence your phone. Preprogram maps. Avoid eating and drinking while you drive. Taking your eyes off of the road is dangerous. Keep your attention fully focused on the task of driving.

If you plan on drinking, don’t drive. Make it that simple.

The weather in and around Atlanta is forecast to be fairly pleasant for Christmas, meaning weather will likely not be a major factor when driving. All the same, be sure to give your car a good check-over to make sure it can handle whatever weather you will be driving in.
