Transcript: Midwives can be a great part of a team of professionals that take care of a mother during pregnancy and during labor. However, midwives are not physicians and there are certain situations that arise that really require the assistance of a physician. They require physician involvement. For example, midwives cannot perform caesarian sections. These have to be performed by a physician. Also, certain high-risk patients really need to be seen by a physician. Because if things go wrong, you want a physician there right away to accomplish delivery of the child. We often see cases where a midwife is managing the patient and doesn’t call a physician soon enough to come in and perform an emergency C-Section. And this often results in an injury to the child.
